SUMMER TIP: CUT DOWN ON ENERGY WITH LOW COST SOLUTIONS

Night Setback Temperature: Modify Your Occupied / Unoccupied Schedule

We’re at the hottest point of the summer, and maintaining comfortable temperatures inside a building is important when occupants are present.  However, significant energy savings, that are low-cost / no-cost solutions, can be achieved by changing the temperature setpoint when a space is not occupied.

This can be achieved through proper programming of the existing Building Automation System (BAS), which can automatically adjust the temperatures of each zone based on the desired schedules for each day of the week.  The space is automatically returned to a comfortable temperature before occupants are scheduled to arrive.  It is recommended that the BAS be programmed to reflect the typical occupancy schedule for each area.

The cost savings if you modify the cooling temperature from 72 to 82 degrees in the summer, and the heating temperature from 68 to 55 degrees in the winter, during unoccupied hours, could yield an approximate savings of 10 percent for heating and cooling costs with a payback in just three months!

Rebates for Commercial Energy Audits Now Available

We are pleased to announce that IMPACTenergy is now a Holy Cross Energy Commercial Audit Program trade partner which allows us to offer rebates for Commercial Energy Audit Studies.  The study rebate is up to 50 percent off the study cost, up to $10,000 for each project.  Additional rebates are available for up to 50 percent off for each retrofit project as well. A Commercial Energy Audit focuses on low-cost energy-saving opportunities and capital improvements that reduce operating costs in the future.

The on-site inspection evaluates all aspects of the facility including: lighting, air conditioning, heating and ventilation equipment, HVAC controls, and all other energy equipment. Following evaluation, a detailed report is provided and includes energy conservation opportunities with the associated payback, savings, cost and available rebates.

What is an Energy Star Certified Building?

Buildings that achieve Energy Star must meet rigorous program standards developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and are designed to operate at a higher performance. The end result: A building that is more energy efficient, comfortable, healthier, valuable and better protects our resources.

The climate is changing.
Commercial buildings in the United States consume 21 percent of the nation’s energy at a cost of more than $100 billion per year. They also generate 21 percent of the United States’ greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change.

Now for some good news: By 2035, 75 percent of all buildings will be new or renovated. What are my LED Lighting Choices?

Lighting represents 40 percent of the electrical consumption in a commercial building, affecting other building systems through its electrical requirements and waste heat production. Lighting retrofits can decrease lighting electricity consumption by 50 percent or more, which makes it one of the first considerations for reducing utility costs.

Technology

Commercial LED applications are one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly-developing technologies. The electricity used over the life of a single incandescent bulb ends up costing 10 times the original purchase price of the bulb itself.  Replacing conventional lighting with LEDs will reduce lighting energy use over the lifetime of the bulb, (up to 50,000 hours), thereby reducing operation costs. LED technology has also made major advancements in color temperature, which results in a “warm” atmosphere that also maximizes lumen/watt output. Available features like dimming, motion sensors, and automatic daylight shut-off further increase LED efficiency.

Products

LED bulbs are currently available in many forms such as LED Replacement  for 4-PIN & 2-PIN CFL making upgrades even easier and more affordable.

Other exciting new products available are 3-way LED bulbs which replace the 3-way incandescent counterparts found in most hotel guest rooms table lamps.

Additional LED bulbs are available include replacements for 40W, 60W, and 75W traditional incandescent, reflector bulbs often used in recessed fixtures, and small track lights.

IMPACT energy Helps Another Builder Attain Highest Energy Star Certification

IMPACTenergy’s latest project is an exciting one: helping guide residential development Lakota Ranch in New Castle, Colo. attain Energy Star Version 3.0 Certification!

“We love working with conscientious builders, who understand that superior home comfort, healthier indoor air, and energy efficiency go hand-in-hand and don’t have to cost a lot if done correctly,” says Melissa Kline, owner and CEO of IMPACTenergy, of the 400-unit development. “These homes, priced from $400-$600,000, will have annual utility costs at least $500 less than comparable new homes.  They are a tremendous value for consumers.”

Sustainable Achievements:

  • ENERGY EFFICIENCY  Energy Star Version 3.0 was designed to produce homes that use less energy. On average, new homes at Lakota Ranch will save their homeowners more than $500 per year on energy bills.  We are targeting 40 percent energy savings compared to similar homes NOT built to Energy Star Version 3.0 standards.
  • COMFORT With well-installed insulation and a properly-sized and balanced heating and cooling system, the Lakota Ranch homes will more easily maintain a constant temperature throughout.
  • HEALTH  Build tight, ventilate right.  Homes built to Energy Star Version 3.0 standards are required to supply fresh air to meet national standards (ASHRAE 62.2).  Unwanted exterior pollutants such as pollen and other allergens will also be filtered from entering the home’s fresh air.  Homes must also meet a maximum air leakage test.
  • VALUE  A home that is less costly to operate is more valuable.  Studies have shown that prospective homeowners will pay a higher sales price for an energy efficient home. A sustainable home will truly be the home that keeps on giving if you decide to sell.
  • ENVIRONMENT  Homes built at the Lakota Ranch development will on average use 17 MMbtu less energy per year than homes built to standard building codes. That’s enough energy to power an average home for nearly half a year and could reduce the amount of coal mined by 4,500 pounds!

IMPACT energy Lighting Audit Leads to Major Savings for Chateau Beaver Creek

The results are in from a recent IMPACTenergy lighting audit to Chateau Beaver Creek: increased comfort, while saving energy and money.  A lighting audit is the foundation of a cost-effective, energy-efficient strategy that enhances the lighting design in your building.  Our goal for the Chateau, as well as all of our lighting projects, is to make an existing lighting system more efficient while maintaining, if not enhancing, the quality of the lighting.

Sustainable Achievements:
  • ENERGY EFFICIENCY  Following their lighting audit, Chateau Beaver Creek will now save more than $50,000 per year on energy bills and operating costs.  The lighting upgrade will save 75 percent in electricity for lighting.
  • COMFORT  Lighting audits evaluate factors such as under-lit spaces, color temperature, and architectural conditions before making recommendations for upgrades to ensure guest comfort.
  • VALUE  With aggressive rebates, LEDs have a better return on investment than CFLs and traditional bulbs.  The rebates available for LEDs are a positive tipping point for the investment, with payback seen in as early as three months.  Chateau Beaver Creek will receive more than $57,000 in rebates for upgrading to a more efficient lighting system.
  • ENVIRONMENT  Chateau Beaver Creek will, on average, save 75 percent on electrical lighting usage. The carbon emission savings is equal to reducing 100 cars on the road per year!

We are exciting to announce that IMPACTenergy is now a preferred trade partner for Xcel Energy’s Recommissioning Study Program.  What does this means for you, the customer? IMPACTenergy is able to offer rebates for Recommissioning Studies and / or Engineering Assistance Audit Studies through Xcel Energy.  The study rebate is up to 75 percent of the study cost, up to $25,000 for each project.  Additional rebates of up to 50 percent off each retrofit project are available as well.

 Recommissioning is a tune-up of mechanical systems that saves energy (and money) for existing buildings. The study assists customers to improve their building operations by identifying systems that can be adjusted to run as efficiently as possible through low-or-no-cost improvements.
